They are attacked by Kakamora, coconut pirates who seek the heart, but Moana and Maui outwit them. A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of Motunui’s chief Tui, to return the heart to Te Fiti. Sixteen years later, blight strikes the island, killing vegetation and shrinking the fish catch.

Maui’s narcissism and arrogance immediately disgusted Moana and though she was amazed to learn of the benefits Maui offered to mankind, she was angered when the demigod tricked and trapped her in a cave in order to steal her boat. Upon escaping the cave and being helped by Ocean to desperately get back to her boat, Moana angrily confronted Maui, who continuously threw her off the boat, only for Ocean to repeatedly put her back on it. When Moana revealed the Heart of Te Fiti to Maui, she was amused to discover he was traumatized by the sight of it. She did not believe that anyone dangerous would appear if she showed the Heart around until the Kakamora revealed themselves before Moana and Maui. After successfully restoring the Heart of Te Fiti and saving Motunui, Moana began a new era of wayfinding where she was watched by her grandmother’s manta ray reincarnation, showing she was still being looked after by Tala through a different life form. When Moana got into another argument with her father, after attempting to convince him to help restore the Heart in attempt to save Motunui, Moana and her father were informed that Tala was suddenly dying, much to their shock.
Moana was able to rescue Pua, but got her foot injured when it was stuck in some coral before she joined Pua in making it back to shore. As they climb a mountain to reach the entrance to the underworld, Maui questions why the ocean chose Moana to save the world, though she doesn’t seem to know, herself. Despite her sudden feeling of self-doubt, Moana follows Maui into Lalotai, and eventually finds the fishhook. She distracts Tamatoa long enough for Maui to take back his hook, but the demigod finds that his shapeshifting abilities are out of whack. Feeling powerful, Tamatoa attacks Maui and imprisons Moana to prevent her from interfering. As she watches helplessly, Tamatoa taunts Maui on his hidden insecurities and alludes to a tragic past.
When Heihei ate Maui when turned into a beetle, Moana was horrified until Maui turned back into his true form, with Heihei stuck on his finger. After surviving an encounter with Te Ka, the first thing Moana did was check to see if Heihei was okay before checking on Maui, leading her to get an argument with him over his hook getting damaged. Moana shared a close relationship with her pet pig, Pua whom she has known since she was a preteen.
Having witnessed her compassion towards the baby sea turtle, the ocean becomes passionate about Moana and chooses her as the heroine destined to save the world. This provides her with Te Fiti’s heart, but when Tui arrives and brings her back to the village, Moana drops the heart and leaves it on the shore. Maui apologizes to Te Fiti, who restores his hook and gives Moana a new boat before falling into a deep sleep and becoming a mountain. Moana bids farewell to Te Fiti, returning home where she reunites with her parents and the rest of the villagers. She then succeeds her father as the chief (Chiefess) and also becomes the wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging. Moana’s grandmother, Tala, tells the story of Maui, the shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea and master of sailing who stole goddess Te Fiti’s heart. However, Te Fiti disintegrates, and Maui is attacked by Te Kā, a volcanic demon. Tui and Sina, Moana’s parents, try to keep her away from Moana the ocean to prepare her to become the island’s chief.

He is overpowered by Tamatoa, but Moana’s quick thinking allows them to escape with the hook. Maui reveals his first tattoo was earned when his human parents abandoned him as an infant, and the gods, taking pity on him, granted him his powers. After reassurance from Moana, Maui teaches her the art of way-finding, regaining control of his powers, and the two grow closer. Moana tries conquering the reef, but is overpowered by the tides and shipwrecked. That afternoon, Moana’s grandmother Tala shows her a secret cavern of ships and reveals Motunui’s people were voyagers until Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart; the ocean was no longer safe without it. Tala explains Te Kā’s darkness is destroying the island, but can be cured if Moana finds Maui and has him restore the heart of Te Fiti.

Promoting powerhouse diversity and pushing away the trappings of romance, “Moana” is a progressive step carrying wonderful messages for young girls in a Millennial day-and-age that is too often obsessed with body image and glamour.
